Cocoa has been grown in Bogunville Islands since the 1930s by European settlers. The Island itself underwent a major transformation in the eighties with mining as the mainstay of the island, and the resistance from the indigenous people threw out the mining. Unfortunately along with this all the interaction with the outside world was reduced for a long time. It is only recently the farming and harvesting of cocoa and coconut has returned to Bogunville and a sustainable harvest of these crops brings in necessary money to the women and children of Bogunville.
